Ryan Reynolds is one of the most high-profile actors in the industry, but even is not immune to making some rather unprofessional mistakes. And he recently opened up about one “inexcusable” mistake he made at a very unfortunate time.
During a discussion at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday, Reynolds opened up about a time when he made a mistake on set that justifiably angered co-star Denzel Washington. He also revealed how he slickly blamed the mistake on someone else to avoid his co-star’s ire.
Reynolds Made an Embarrassing Mistake
During the filming of the 2012 action thriller Safe House, Reynolds made a critical mistake as his co-star was filming a difficult scene: he forgot to silence his phone.
While shooting his final scene, where Washington’s character is dying, Reynolds said that his phone went off. Needless to say, his co-star was not pleased.

“Who the [expletive]’s phone is that?” Washington yelled, according to Reynolds.
“He’s been shot, wounded, dying, admits all the stuff that he did wrong. Tears start rolling down his face. And suddenly you hear — and this is take two, by the way, because take one there was a technical problem — we hear [Frank Sinatra singing] ‘Come fly with me, let’s fly, let’s fly away.'”
Blaming the Mistake on Someone Else
It was undoubtedly a mistake on Reynolds’ part, but he was not willing to own up to it in the moment. Instead, he placed blame on the stunt team.
“I stand up and look at all the stuntmen around me, and I go, ‘Who the [expletive]’s phone is that? Inexcusable!'” Reynolds recalled.
“[The assistant director] was like, ‘D, can you do another one?’ And [Washington] was like, ‘We’re going to have to, aren’t we?'” Reynolds said. “And I’m like, ‘Yes, [because of] the stuntmen! Inexcusable!'”
Obviously, though, the cat is out of the bag now.
