After the meeting held by producers of Jalisco, Michoacán and Guanajuato and the federal government today, the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), Julio Berdeguéannounced that a price of 6,050 pesos per ton of white corn was proposed to corn growers, a 25 percent increase in the cost of the grain internationally, based on central Mexico, a measure that farmers are currently analyzing.
The measure also includes a credit for white corn producers with an annual interest rate of 8.5 percent, as well as agricultural insurance support. “We are going to open the windows as soon as possible for white corn producers from the three entities that want to register, and the governments of Jalisco, Guanajuato and Michoacán will also publish their operational mechanisms of complementary support to complete the indicated price,” said the official.

Corn producers demanded seven thousand 200 pesos per ton of grain. After they met on October 17 in Mexico City with Secretary Berdegué and other authorities, this morning they once again blocked roads and took over booths in different entities of the country.
In Jalisco, blockades were recorded at kilometer 40 of the Guadalajara – Morelia Highway, as well as concentrations of producers in Ocotlán, La Barca, Atotonilco, Degollado and Arandas..
Currently, a ton of corn sells between five thousand and five thousand 200 pesos, and Luciano Vivanco, a producer from San Martín Hidalgo, assured this publishing house this morning that this price is not enough to cover production expenses.
