Sam Fender rocked the Toon this month: All his best bits you missed at St James’ Park

Local hero Sam Fender did the first of his much anticipated St James performances earlier this month – and he did not disappoint.

If you happened to miss the gig and have severe fomo… don’t worry we’ve got you covered.

In classic Geordie fashion, sam opened by covering local hero by Mark Knopfer, establishing the north east pride that ran throughout the crowd all night, before playing Getting Started. Fitting.

The rest of the concert saw an array of songs from his discography, but fans primarily enjoyed tracks from his debut album hypersonic missiles and his newest album people watching.

The gig was enjoyed by thousands of locals, including the likes of dan burns, the Newcastle United football player, who was lucky enough to get his Pretty Green Eyes chant mid-performance.

A 15-year-old busker who had been performing outside the stadium also had the luck of performing The Borders with sam himself. The lad EVEN mentioned refusing money whilst busking because he “only does it because he loves it”. Canny bairn x

Other special guests included sam’s brother, Liam Fender, during Something Heavy, and even his old guitar teacher Phil Martin for a cover of The Boys Are Back in Town. Wholesome x

As usual, Howdon Aldi Death Queue caused intense scenes as fans began mosh pits.

One fan called Cerys Millard described the night as “unreal” whilst another, Grace Stobart, described the atmosphere as a “10/10 [especially] as a local”. she described it “hitting different” and feeling “so proud to be northern”, “especially in the stadium”. For her and a lot of other Geordies it was definitely emotional.

Another fan, Connor Robertson, mentioned his exit, slightly underwhelmed as he left the stage without a goodbye.

Nevertheless, fender undoubtedly created a euphoric atmosphere to end the night, as he played the much-loved Hypersonic Missiles.
Confetti and fireworks shot into the sky, marking the night as a magical one for the Geordies.
