SANParks Free Week 2025: Top 5 National Parks to Visit

South African National Parks Week is back for 2025, offering South African citizens and residents free day-entry to most of the country’s 21 national parks. This year’s celebration runs from 22 to 26 September, with extended access to 27 and 28 September at selected parks. It’s a golden opportunity to connect with nature, explore diverse landscapes, and take pride in our conservation heritage without the entry fee.

This initiative has been building momentum since its inception in 2006, welcoming hundreds of thousands of day visitors while raising awareness about sustainable conservation and inclusive access. Importantly, while entry is free, accommodation, guided tours, and special activities remain payable, so plan accordingly.

If you’re looking for ways to make the most of this week, here’s our curated list of the Top 5 Parks to Visit, from Big Five experiences to coastal wonders and serene wilderness. Each section offers insights and inspirational tips to craft a memorable outing.

1. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK

Kruger, launching SA National Parks Week with a special event at Mopani Rest Camp on 21 September, offers free entry from 22–26 September.

Kruger provides one of the best Big Five experiences in SA, which is ideal for wildlife enthusiasts. With vast savannahs and expert-guided drives (fee applies), it’s a safari classic.

But remember: it’s a popular park that fills up quickly. Arrive early or at off-peak times to reduce queues. Planning is key to a smooth day visit.

2. TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

Explore Cape Town’s famed wilderness during free entry to Table Mountain National Park from 22–25 September (Boulders Penguin Colony and cableway excluded).

Hike iconic trails, soak in city views, or picnic on the plateau. The dramatic landscapes and proximity to Cape Town make it an accessible gem. Just remember that some sections require a fee, so stick to the included areas.

3. WEST COAST NATIONAL PARK

If you visit the West Coast National Park during SANParks Week (22–28 September), you’ll catch one of South Africa’s most spectacular seasonal displays: the wildflower bloom. Each spring, vast carpets of daisies, vygies, and other indigenous plants transform the landscape into a living tapestry of colour. It’s a photographer’s dream and a must-see for nature lovers.

Beyond the blooms, the park offers birdwatching at Langebaan Lagoon, cycling routes, and picnic spots. Arrive early, as queues are common during the flower season. With the bonus of free entry, it’s one of the most rewarding day trips from Cape Town.

4. BOULDERS BEACH (TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK)

Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is one of the most iconic spots within Table Mountain National Park, famous for its colony of African penguins. Normally, entry here is separate and comes at an additional fee, but during SANParks Week 2025, selected days will allow free access (check dates locally as they differ slightly from the rest of the park).

A boardwalk takes you close to the penguins without disturbing them, and the sheltered beach is perfect for families wanting to swim in calmer waters. Keep in mind that it’s a very popular site, so expect crowds, especially on weekends. If you’ve never seen the penguins up close, this is an unmissable experience during the free week.

5. GARDEN ROUTE NATIONAL PARK

Open for free from 22–28 September.

From lush rainforest trails to coastline and mountain hikes, the Garden Route NP covers iconic South African terrain. A mix of hiking, canoeing (fees may apply), and wildlife makes it great for all ages; just choose fee-free activities.
