SAPS recruitment: How to apply and what you’ll earn

The South African Police Service (SAPS) says its historic e-recruitment drive will curb corruption and nepotism from entering its ranks.

The platform was launched with the aim of employing 5,500 aspiring police officers. It allows for online applications for entry-level police trainee posts via the official SAPS website. The service said the digital shift will also reduce paperwork and prevent lost applications, while enhancing fairness, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. SAPS said it will also improve the integrity and speed of the recruitment process.

The nationwide recruitment process will close on Friday, 18 July. The police department encourages people aged between 18 and 35 to apply as trainees.

HOW MUCH WILL YOU EARN?

Successful recruits will undergo nine months of training and receive a monthly stipend of R4,500. The police service also stressed that the application process is free of charge.

“No position within the SAPS is for sale. Applications must be submitted exclusively through the official SAPS website portal,” said SAPS.

WHO WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR THE SAPS RECRUITMENT?

SAPS said it will consider applicants with specific skills or qualifications, such as graduates in law and information technology. Applicants must not have a criminal record or any pending criminal cases.

The police service said it will enlist disciplined, energetic, intelligent, and physically and mentally fit individuals. The rigorous selection process includes psychometric testing, integrity assessments, physical fitness evaluations, fingerprint/vetting screening, and medical examinations.
