An Arctic storm has hit parts of the US causing a massive 100-car pileup in Michigan.

Interstate 196 in Michigan was shut down after six inches of snow and freezing temperatures made driving conditions dangerous.

Cars began to collide into each other, while others were left veering off the road to avoid the crash.

Footage shows the crash, with an estimated 30 to 40 semi-trucks involved.

Drivers were left stranded on the road, with motorists warned to remain in their vehicles until help arrives.

So far only minor injuries have been reported.

The Ottawa County Sheriffs Office said the snow causing a domino reaction at around 10.20am, with heavy snow impacting visibility.

Some ars were forced to veer off the road to avoid a collision

One person involved posted online: ‘My fiancés truck is the one hit by the semi in the ditch mine is the white explorer next to it.

‘We saw all the semis coming from the back of us and quickly decided to drive into the ditch rather than being hit. So scary.

‘It was the scariest thing to hear and watch.’

Michigan State Police has advised drivers to slow down, warning ‘road conditions are treacherous.

They added: ‘Blowing winds and blinding snow are creating dangerous travel conditions.’
