The Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) announced this Saturday the seizure of more than a ton of drugs that was hidden among boxes of chili in a cargo truck, during an inspection carried out in the state of Sonoraon the border with the United States.
According to the official report, elements of the Mexican Army and the National Guard intercepted a tractor-trailer at the checkpoint located in San Luis Río Colorado, where they found several packages with illicit substances hidden among the merchandise.
The seizure included approximately 1,777 kilograms of alleged methamphetamine4 kilograms of fentanyl and 5 kilograms of opium gum.
The driver of the vehicle, which was destined for the city of Mexicali, Baja California, and came from the municipality of Espinal, Sinaloa, was detained by the authorities for the corresponding investigations.
“The detainee and the evidence seized were made available to the competent authorities to determine his legal situation, continue with the investigations and the pertinent expert actions,” Defense added.
Faced with pressure from the Government of the president of the United States, Donald Trumpto improve its security strategy and take measures to stop fentanyl trafficking, Mexico launched Operation Northern Border last February, agreed with the EU to avoid generalized tariffs of 25%.
Mexico has confiscated 98.3 tons of drugs, including 452.3 kilograms of fentanyl, while has arrested 7,482 people, between February and last September 22, according to official reports about said operation.
