The Secretary of the Navy (Semar) reported that as of today, the search operation for the alleged castaway reported by the United States Coast Guard will go to “suspended active” status. The decision comes after 96 hours have passed since the start of the operation, which began after the attacks on alleged “drug boats” in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, October 28.
Semar specified that, although the ocean patrol and the aircraft participating in the search will return to their regular operations, surveillance will be maintained by vessels transiting the area. The measure seeks to continue locating the alleged survivor in a coordinated manner and in accordance with international treaties.
On October 28, four boats accused of transporting drugs were attacked three times, leaving 14 dead and one survivor, according to Pete Hegseth, United States Secretary of War. Mexico participated in the rescue after receiving notification from the US Coast Guard, and President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that the operation was carried out “for humanitarian reasons” and within international treaties.
The search is being carried out more than 450 miles southwest of Acapulco (830 km), in compliance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). At this time, there is no additional information about the person reported as a survivor.
These events are part of the US offensive against drug trafficking in the open sea, which since September 2 has sunk 15 vessels and left 61 dead in the Caribbean and the Pacific, according to records up to October 29.
