Amid Seth Rogen’s filmography in the comedy genre with movies like Sausage Party, Neighbors, This is the End, and more, there’s one movie that fans have always wanted a sequel to: Pineapple Express.
In an appearance on Watch What Happened Live, Rogen talked about the possibility of the 2008 stoner movie getting a sequel after host Andy Cohen read a fan question bringing up the topic, according to Deadline.
“Maybe,” Rogen said. “We can probably sell it to streaming or something.”
Cohen added that Hollywood has been big on creating sequels to popular movies. Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore released a second installment on Netflix, with Freaky Friday also getting a sequel titled Freakier Friday.
“There could be. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day,” commented Rogen about Pineapple Express 2 happening as sequels are in high demand.
When Pineapple Express was released in theaters, it was a commercial success, making $102.4 million at the box office compared to its $26 million budget. The success of the movie originally led to plans for a sequel, but it ended up getting scrapped due to the budget.
Back in 2020, Rogen said on The Howard Stern Show, “We tried to make one. Thanks to the Sony hack, you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it. It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it.”
Another obstacle to making a sequel would be whether James Franco would return in his original role alongside Rogen. Back in 2024, Franco said in an interview with Variety that he and Rogen were no longer friends after his career derailed due to sexual assault allegations.
Rogen has remained fairly quiet about his current friendship status with Franco, but does admit the allegations changed the dynamic of their relationship.
