Seth Rogen’s ‘Pineapple Express’ Comments Spark Hope for a ’Superbad’ Sequel – Bundlezy

Seth Rogen’s ‘Pineapple Express’ Comments Spark Hope for a ’Superbad’ Sequel

Seth Rogen isn’t bidding farewell to the popular 2008 film Pineapple Express, not yet, at least. Although Rogen’s previous comments on the possibility of a Pineapple Express sequel left the outlook gloomy, the topic was brought up again when he joined Watch What Happens Live.

Rogen, who starred in the comedy while also writing it, was joined by James Franco, Danny McBride, Gary Cole, Craig Robinson, Rosie Perez and several other noteworthy names. The film featured a process server (Rogen) and his marijuana dealer (Franco) who witness a murder, resulting in them having to flee hitmen and corrupt police officers.

However, for as much interest Rogen’s comments brought surrounding Pineapple Express, it also ignited optimism from fans around another one of his early 2000s comedies.

Seth Rogen Leaves Door Open for ‘Pineapple Express’ Sequel

Following comments made by Rogen on The Howard Stern Show years ago, the chances of a sequel to the comedy were bleak, although he attempted to move forward with the follow-up film. Rogen revealed that a sequel was pitched to Sony Pictures, but they weren’t interested, as Variety highlighted.

“We tried to make one and thanks to the Sony hack you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it,” Rogen revealed at the time. “It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it… I think we probably wanted too much money. Studios, they don’t like giving away money.”

However, it’s a new day and age, and while Rogen didn’t offer a clear-cut “yes” to making a sequel, he did leave the door open while speaking on Watch What Happens Live.

“Maybe,” Rogen said when asked about making a sequel, per Variety. “We can probably sell it to streaming or something…There could be [big demand]. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day.”

Seth Rogen’s ‘Pineapple Express’ Comments Rehash Push From Fans for a ‘Superbad’ Sequel

While a sequel for any of the early 2000s films Rogen starred in seems like a long shot, his comments on Pineapple Express brought a revived push for another movie’s return—Superbad.

After taking a deeper dive into the Superbad fandom, the hope of a sequel had still been trickling in on social media as recently as the past few months.

“Can we just get a sequel to superbad or pineapple express,” said one fan on X.

“How about a Superbad sequel with all of them reuniting for a weekend. Fogel must be some tech billionaire now,” replied another fan.

“If there ever was a comedy that needed a sequel it would be Superbad 2 – Grown up, but still Superbad!!” said a fan while pushing for the Superbad sequel.

“Picture this: Jenna and Sabrina team up again for a Superbad 2. Emo girly and miss popular, still high school setting, same 2000s era, not a sequel or prequel, Apatow on board, plot is still up in the air,” read another comment on X.

Unfortunately, there is some bad news for longtime Superbad fans. The chances of a follow-up film don’t appear likely, which Rogen and Evan Goldberg all but confirmed previously. During a 2024 interview with Complex, Goldberg called Superbad one of the film’s “better left untouched.”

However, it’s worth noting that Pineapple Express was initially included on that list as well.

“We’re not opposed to revisiting some things. Like Sausage Party. Superbad and Pineapple Express, we will not be revisiting,” Goldberg said. “We will keep those safe and sound. There are a few things that are best left untouched.”

Who knows, maybe there’ll be a change of heart on the horizon. For now, though, it’s probably safer not to hold out hope for a Superbad 2.
