Seven of the best day trips from Edinburgh to enjoy Scotland this summer

As a student in Edinburgh, I am sure you are well acquainted with the city’s amenities and wonderful summertime atmosphere. However, a change of scenery once in a while is good for the soul, and what if I told you it doesn’t need to break the bank or travel far away.

Despite Scotland’s temperamental weather, I promise you there are many amazing day trips outside the capital that feel like a holiday-without the flight catching and excessive planning.

1. Arbroath (And the East Coast)

I am going to start of with my completely biased and honourable mention of the East Coast, home to many fishing towns with beautiful harbours, stunning coastal landscapes, and not to forget delicious fish and chips (or ice cream for those with a sweeter tooth).

Many places sprung to my mind whilst writing this but I’m sorry, I need to plug my hometown – the one and only Arbroath.

Home of the famous Arbroath smokie, the town offers countless ways to enjoy Scottish culture and is only a 1.5 hour journey from the capital on the train or by bus.

Take a lovely walk round the iconic red stone cliff trail or a wander to the harbour where you can admire the many fishing boats and taste test the fish and chips. To end I would obviously suggest you to grab some ice cream and try to spot the famous lighthouse from the shore.

As nice as a swim sounds, even in summer the water is going to be freezing

2. Jupiter Artland

If a coastal escape is not your thing, don’t worry I have many other fabulous day trips to propose. Taking it closer to the city, I want to rave about Jupiter Artland.

Located just 35 minutes from the city centre, Jupiter Artland is a super funky and interesting place to explore hidden in the Pentlands. Beyond its status of a museum or art gallery, Jupiter Artland stimulates artistic wonder whilst providing a fun experience.

Hosting an array of exhibitions and outdoor landscapes, this place is truly one to visit (bonus: The photo ops are endless).

As if this place couldn’t get any more exciting, they offer a chance to go for a sunset swim in the outdoor pool located on the grounds so you can enjoy an idyllic swim amongst the art.

Of course there is an amazing cafe where you can take a break from the wonder and really make a day out of this place. I felt like I stepped out into Barcelona’s art scene when I visited, and so close to the city it is the best of both worlds.

I feel like this speaks for itself x

3. Aviemore

It would be a complete injustice to Scotland and her beauty if I did not put some respect on Aviemore’s name.

For outdoorsy and thrill seeking individuals, Aviemore is really such a majestic place. Hosting a shower of beautiful walks showcasing The Cairngorms, Aviemore encapsulates Scotland’s natural essence and is a place loved by so many.

Alongside nature walks with stunning views, Aviemore offers an array of activities such as canoeing, watersports, golf, and go carting. Grab some friends and take a walk on the wild side and visit Aviemore this summer break.

Loch Uaine…How stunning is she btw?

4. St.Andrews

My honourable mention has got to be the lovely St.Andrews. Not only is St.Andrews easily accessible from the city, it offers An abundance of activities for any budget. Featuring food stalls providing fresh fish or burgers, St.Andrews is perf for a wholesome day out. Walking round the streets and popping into the unique shops (the crystal shop is my personal fave for all the wannabe witches) makes for a very nice day out. There are also historical landmarks such as the university campus and the castle to fill your boots with. For those seeking some interactive experiences, old course is perfect for some competitive fun with either golf or mini golf. Go and find out why the students of St.Andrews love it so much.

5. Irvine

Another one for the outdoors lovers, may I present to you the town of Irvine. Situated in North Ayrshire, Irvine is home to amazing coastal walks, bike trails, and hikes. Ingest the sea breeze and take some time to unwind here by using Mother Nature. Irvine is also home to the Scottish Maritime Museum for those interested in Scotland’s seafaring legacy. Whether you seek a walk, hike, history, or just a spot of ice cream accompanied by the coastal landscape, Irvine is full of things to fill your day trip.

6. Glasgow

A contrast to some of the other hotspots I have plugged, I of course had to mention our rival in the central belt, the city of Glasgow.

Known for its crazy nightlife, historic architecture, and of course its people (they do make Glasgow afterall), our dear green place also has some underrated gems to visit if you’re looking for a change of Edinburgh scenery this summer.

From Kelvingrove Park to the Botanical Gardens, there is so much to do in Glasgow for little to no money. Grab a picnic, sit in the sunshine, or take a walk round the West End where you can find Ashton Lane and grab a drink, you won’t run out of things to do here.

I thought someone said the trees never grew?

So…what are you waiting for? Use your time in Edinburgh this summer to your advantage and explore Scotland in all her glory.
