Shaquille O’Neal Buys Car for College Wrestler in Amazing Act of Kindness

One of the most prolific big men in NBA showed off his big heart with an extremely generous gift to a college athlete.

Shaquille O’Neal had a great career on the court, winning four NBA championships and a league MVP, but he’s been known for his kindness and philanthropy after retirement.

The former Los Angeles Lakers star has walked into countless restaurants and stores to pay for patrons’ meals or carts, and he’s worked with businesses to provide lower costs and more accessible items for customers.

O’Neal’s latest kind act came at the perfect time for one young wrestler who’s showed promise in the early portion of her college career.

NBA Legend Meets Exceptional College Wrestler

Tamara Humphries, an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, is considered one of the most talented wrestlers to come out of the region in years. Her efforts and work ethic earned her a full scholarship to the University, but she faced a significant hurdle.

Humphries was unable to get to practice and tournaments reliably, because she didn’t have a car. The teen worked all summer at a local restaurant, and that’s where the Basketball Hall of Famer surprised her with the incredible gift.

“You keep body slamming people, you keep listening, and you keep your grades up. I love you,” O’Neal said in a video message to the young wrestler, according to Pittsburgh’s CBS affiliate KDKA.

“I’ve never had a car, ever,” Humphries said. “I’m going to keep the journey going, live for everybody, and we’re all going to do this together and get some Olympic titles.”

Humphries’ Impressive Alter Ego

Humphries is known as the “Firefly” among friends and family, who say that she essentially turns into a different person when she competes. She got her start wrestling against boys, earning five victories in her first season but showing a will to compete that exceeded many of her competitors.

“She’s pacing up and down the side of the gym. Got her headphones on. Not doing much talking. Ready to go to work,” said her father, DeAndre Humphries.

It’s not too far off from O’Neal himself, who took up the mantle of “Superman” during his NBA career. O’Neal even portrayed DC Comics superhero Steel in a feature film, and has shown an affinity for the character for many years.

O’Neal’s acts of kindness have resonated with many around the country for the last few decades, and it’s clear that Humphries intends to make good on her claim to the former basketball star about bringing home Olympic medals.
