Shark warning as headless whale carcass towed into Hout Bay Harbour – Bundlezy

Shark warning as headless whale carcass towed into Hout Bay Harbour

The public have been strongly advised to avoid entering the ocean in and around Hout Bay for the next few days due to a heightened risk of shark activity.

The increased risk comes as a result of a headless and tailless whale carcass being towed into Hout Bay Harbour.

‘It has no tail nor head and parts of its guts are spilling into the ocean, which generally results in increased shark activity,’ the broadcast read.

Carcass to be disposed

Authorities are therefore urging caution until the whale has been safely removed, as this spilling of internal organs into the ocean creates an attractive environment for sharks.

‘It is recommended to stay out of the ocean for the next while,’ the broadcast added.

The towing was conducted by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) on Wednesday, 18 June, with the intention that the City of Cape Town (CoCT) would be collecting the carcass for disposal.
