The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, reported this Tuesday that Mexico will seek the extradition of businessman Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, husband of television presenter Inés Gómez Mont, who was arrested yesterday, Monday, October 27, in the United States.
Álvarez Puga was a fugitive since 2021 for being accused of tax evasion and money laundering in Mexico.
“Yes, the idea is that he be extradited to Mexico”the President emphasized during her morning press conference.
Without giving further details, the Mexican leader noted that they are waiting for information from the Mexican Prosecutor’s Office on the businessman’s case.
“I hope that in a few hours we can have all the information,” he said.
On Monday, the arrest of Álvarez Puga was revealed, who was “in custody” of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) at the Krome detention center, in west Miami.
Although the reasons for his detention were not detailed, his stay in said center implies that the reasons are immigration-related, so his deportation to Mexico is expected, where the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has been searching for him since September 2021 along with Gómez Mont.
In addition, Interpol issued a red search and arrest card against the couple in October 2021.
Both are accused of the crimes of embezzlement or embezzlement of funds, organized crime and operations with resources of illicit origin.which amount to 3 billion pesos (more than 160 million dollars), for which an arrest warrant was issued against him.
The driver, the businessman and his brother, Alejandro Álvarez Puga, would be involved in the use of shell companies that facilitate tax evasion, diversion of public resources and money laundering for third parties, according to Mexican authorities, although she has declared herself “innocent.”
The case has attracted media attention in Mexico due to the popularity of Gómez Mont with entertainment programs such as Ventaneando, on TV Azteca, while in the United States it made headlines when she appeared at a press conference dressed as a bride to propose to athlete Tom Brady in 2008.
The legal problems began in 2010, when the then Attorney General’s Office (PGR) of Mexico and the Tax Administration Service (SAT) searched the offices of the Álvarez Puga y Asociados office.
The Tax Administration Service (SAT) indicated that the accounting firm advised its clients to register their workers as partners or cooperative members in order to not pay them the distribution of profits and evade taxes and social security payments.
