This Friday, the President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated that José Manuel Albares, Minister of Spain, regret the atrocities committed by the Spanish conquerors in Mexican territory. Albares’ statements were made during the inauguration of an art exhibition by indigenous Mexican women in the European country.
“There has been pain, pain and injustice towards the indigenous peoples to whom this exhibition is dedicated“, stated the minister. Sheinbaum celebrated this action in “La Mañanera” this Friday, October 31: “Congratulations on this first step“. The President also remarked that “It is the first time that a Spanish government authority speaks of regretting injustice“.

Mexico’s demand to Spain for King Felipe VI to apologize for the conquest dates back to 2019, when the then president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2014) sent a letter to the monarch and the then Pope Francis. In it he requested that they apologize for the “invasion“which entailed the conquest of America and the”killings“committed five centuries ago”with the sword and with the cross“. The late pontiff did so on several occasions.

The Spanish king, a regular presence for years at the inaugurations of Latin American presidents, was not invited to Sheinbaum’s inauguration in October 2024.
The President said that she decided not to invite him out of conviction and that the basis of that decision was “grievance that I think is beginning to be settled today“.
