In her morning conference this Thursday, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, expressed her rejection of the United States attacks against vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking outside its territory.
“Obviously we do not agree”said the President when asked about the recent military actions of US forces in international waters.
“There are international laws on how to deal with alleged transport of drugs or weapons in international waters, and we have expressed this to the United States Government and publicly,” he stressed.
The Mexican leader emphasized that her Administration maintains a frank dialogue with Washington, but “without ever renouncing our principles of sovereignty, free determination and self-determination of the people of Mexico.” Sheinbaum recalled that his Government has strengthened the constitutional framework in this matter.
“We even modified the Constitution to strengthen the sense of sovereignty in article 40, against any interventionism or interference,” he added.
The reaction of the Mexican leader occurs after the Administration of US President Donald Trump expanded its military operations against drug trafficking with at least two attacks on vessels in the Pacific, near Colombia, that were supposedly transporting drugs, after those previously carried out against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean, near Venezuela.
On the other hand, Sheinbaum avoided speaking directly about the recent exchanges of statements between Trump and the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, but called for diplomatic respect to be maintained.
“Everyone has their own way of facing an international debate or the relationship with the United States,” he said.
With a conciliatory tone, the President reiterated that her foreign policy is guided by Mexico’s historical principles, combining firmness in the defense of sovereignty with international cooperation.
“We have established that mechanism,” he insisted. The Mexican Government has reiterated on several occasions that any action outside the international legal framework can put bilateral cooperation in security at risk, within the framework of collaboration between Mexico and the United States to combat organized crime and address the social causes of drug trafficking.
