Sheinbaum: The US would not apply new tariffs to Mexico on November 1

This Monday, October 27, the President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that, for now, On November 1, the United States would not apply new tariffs to Mexico.

The above is derived from the Federal President reporting that last Saturday she had a phone call with her counterpart from the neighboring country, Donald Trumpin which they agreed that the teams from both countries will continue working on trade negotiations.

Claudia Sheinbaum maintained that there is a positive balance in “the issues of security, migration and trade.”

In the National Palace, this morning, the President said that it was agreed to “give a few more weeks to be able to close the issue,” and therefore “call us in the following weeks to seek to close the agreement before the negotiations for the revision of the Treaty (T-MEC) begin.”

Sheinbaum Pardo explained that it was a very brief and cordial conversation, “I was interested in not having November 1 arrive without us calling each other and agreeing that our teams were still working.”

He added that “We will call as soon as the teams finish working. There is no situation, for now, that there could be a special tariff on November 1” or new.

Trump had threatened to impose levies on heavy-duty vehicles starting November 1, but, according to Sheinbaum, “there is no situation” for this to happen.

As he explained in his morning conference, the call was “very brief” and only trade issues were discussed, specifically the 54 non-tariff barriers that, according to Trump, harm his country’s economy.

Mexico is one of the most vulnerable countries to duty of Donald Trump, since more than 80% of its exports are destined for the United States, its largest trading partner in the free trade agreement T-MEC.

Mexico, the United States and Canada are preparing to review the T-MEC agreement in 2026.
