CUPERTINO / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The new MacBook Pro with the M5 chip shows minimal progress in repairability, an iFixit test reveals. Although the design remains largely unchanged, there are small but significant changes that make certain components easier to access. However, replacing parts such as the battery remains complex and time-consuming.

The new MacBook Pro with Apple’s M5 chip brings with it some interesting innovations, especially in terms of ease of repair. While the external design and internal structure remain largely unchanged, Apple has made small but significant improvements that make certain components easier to access. These changes were highlighted by the experts at iFixit, who conducted a thorough analysis of the device.
One of the most notable changes concerns access to the central battery cell adhesive strips. In contrast to previous models, the trackpad no longer needs to be removed to access these strips. This saves one step and makes replacing the battery slightly easier. However, replacing the battery remains a complex task, as almost every component of the MacBook Pro has to be removed to reach the battery. Apple continues to only sell the battery as part of the complete top case, which makes replacing it expensive and inconvenient.
The modular components such as fans and connectors are theoretically easier to replace, but they are located under the logic board and are therefore difficult to access. To reach these components, the motherboard must be removed, making the repair process much more difficult. This design makes even small repairs a nerve-wracking procedure, which is also reflected in the iFixit rating. The new model receives four out of ten points for ease of repair, which represents a step backwards from the M1 model.
On the positive side, Apple is providing repair instructions right at the product launch for the first time. These instructions contain safety-related information, such as disconnecting the Battery Management System cable to avoid short circuits. This documentation is an important step towards DIY repairs and supports independent workshops. Nevertheless, the question of whether Apple will take greater steps towards better repairability in the future remains open.
