Android TV app SmartTube, a popular YouTube client, was recently rocked by a security incident. Unknown attackers were able to infect the app with malware and distribute it to users via an update. The developer has since responded and taken the compromised version offline while he works on a new, secure version.
The incident was made possible because the attackers gained access to the developer’s private key, which is used to sign the app. With this key they were able to make the manipulated app appear legitimate and put it into circulation. Fortunately, Google’s Play Protect protection mechanism raised the alarm for some users and blocked the malicious version.
An initial analysis of the malicious code shows that the malware is hidden in the libalphasdk.so library. The code transmits metrics to a server, but so far there is no evidence that account data was recorded or DDoS activity was carried out. However, the danger remains because the app can receive instructions from the attackers.
The developer has published further background information on the incident on GitHub and provided a beta version of the app signed with a new key. He plans to release more details once the investigation is complete, particularly how the key went missing. Users are requested to uninstall the old version and wait for the new, secure version.
