A baby names expert has spoken out about an emerging new trend – and it’s a quite a strange one.
SJ Strum, from BabyCentre UK, believes there has been a rise in parents naming their kids after (wait for it)… serial killers.
Yes, you heard that right. The website’s top 100 baby names for 2025 features names such as Rose (West), Teddy (Bundy), Erin (Patterson), and Ronnie and Reggie (the Kray twins) are on the rise.
Author SJ thinks this is not necessarily down to the people themselves, but more so the names being subconsciously more prevalent due to increased popularity in true crime documentaries.
She told The Mirror: “These names aren’t being chosen because of crime. More often, parents are unconsciously absorbing popular culture, and these names creep into our minds via gripping TV, podcasts and viral content.
“It’s a fascinating lens on how culture shapes language, and by extension, baby names.”
In non-serial killer news, there was no change in the top five for girls and boys names in the UK.
For girls, Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Emma, and Charlotte remain the top choices.
For boys, its Noah, Liam, Oliver, Elijah, and Mateo that are the most popular at the moment.
New entrants on the top 100 include Malachi and August for boys, and Everleigh and Oaklynn for girls.
