Here’s what a JEEP Alert is from A House of Dynamite, and if it’s real
In the film, JEEP Alert stands for Joint Emergency Evacuation Plan and it’s the strategy in place to evacuate important people from the US government during a threat or crisis. They launch a JEEP Alert to evacuate the president and other officials when they hear the nuclear missile has been launched.
Netflix’s official description is: “A coordinated strategy developed by US government and military agencies to rapidly evacuate key personnel in the event of a national security crisis or imminent threat.”
It’s completely made up, but is based on real life concepts, including Continuity of Government (COG). In the US, COG is a set of procedures in place to make sure a government can continue its essential operations when there is a catastrophic event, such as nuclear war or a terrorist attack.
The US government has various steps in place to make sure they can evacuate the necessary people and relocate them to safe, secure locations across the country where they can continue operating in a new place. This is essentially what the JEEP Alert is in A House of Dynamite.
When making the film, the creators spoke to real experts, including policy analysts, journalists, former intelligence directors and government officials, to recreate a “real doomsday scenario,” TIME reports. They also worked very closely with a former army officer Dan Karbler.
“[The film] does such a good job of capturing a piece that we never really capture when we are running through these exercises — being able to see the human reaction, which we don’t practice,” he told Netflix’s Tudum.
“So what the movie really drives home, in addition to the authenticity about the process and all that, is just the human element and how different folks are affected, whether it’s those young soldiers at Fort Greely to the STRATCOM staff all the way up to the President of the United States.”
