On Sunday, 7 September, South Africans will get front-row seats to one of the year’s most spectacular celestial events: the Blood Moon.
As Earth’s shadow swallows the moon, it will glow a haunting red for over an hour. The best part? No telescope is needed. All you need is a clear sky and the right spot.
If you’re planning to make a night (and weekend) of it, here are some of South Africa’s top locations for stargazing and watching the Blood Moon in comfort and style…
1. Sutherland, Northern Cape, South Africa

Known as the stargazing capital of the country, Sutherland is home to the South African Astronomical Observatory (SALT). With some of the darkest skies in the Southern Hemisphere, this Karoo town offers unmatched clarity. On Blood Moon night, it’s the ultimate destination for serious skywatchers.
2. Cederberg Mountains, Western Cape

The Cederberg Wilderness Area offers a dramatic, remote landscape with minimal light pollution. Set up camp among sandstone cliffs and ancient rock art, and you’ll get a clear, uninterrupted view of the eclipse as the night sky comes alive.
3. Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The Drakensberg Mountains provide breathtaking backdrops for stargazing. With wide horizons and crisp mountain air, this region is perfect for combining a hiking weekend with a celestial show. The high-altitude skies here are often crystal clear.
4. Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga & Limpopo
While most people visit Kruger for the wildlife, it also offers stunning night skies. Away from city lights, you can watch the Blood Moon rise above the bushveld, accompanied by the sounds of the African night. Safari by day, eclipse by night – it doesn’t get better!
5. Karoo National Park, Western Cape

The Karoo’s vast open spaces and low population mean some of the least polluted skies in South Africa. The Blood Moon rising over the flat plains makes for a dramatic, unforgettable view.
6. Hartbeespoort Dam, North West
For Gauteng residents, Hartbeespoort offers a convenient escape from the city’s light pollution. Just an hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria, it’s a great spot for those who want a clear view without a long drive.
