Southern Launch and Varda Space Industries have signed a significant contract that will enable the return of 20 additional spacecraft to the Koonibba Test Range by 2028. This agreement underlines South Australia’s role as a global center for orbital return missions and builds on the success of the W-Series missions, including the historic W-2 mission, which marked the first commercial spacecraft landing at a commercial spaceport in February 2025.
The new missions will return to Earth Varda’s zero-gravity capsules that have carried out novel drugs or experiments in microgravity. The capsules enter the Earth’s atmosphere at Mach 25 and parachute into the Koonibba Test Range, which Southern Launch operates in partnership with the Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation.
Varda and Southern Launch are the two leading commercial companies driving the global emerging orbital economy. Their partnership serves as a shining example of how new space companies are working together to bring back space-made products to benefit people on Earth. This new agreement will cement Australia’s role as a leading nation in commercial space and return missions.
Southern Launch CEO Lloyd Damp emphasized that the contract reflects the growing demand for reliable return infrastructure as the global economy of zero-gravity manufactured products becomes the norm. Varda Chief Revenue Officer Eric Lasker explained that the partnership with Southern Launch is key to realizing this new economy.
