Mexico City, October 31 (However).- The President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo celebrated this Friday the declarations ofhe Chancellor of the Spanish Government, Juan Manuel Albareswho named the pain and the injustice that the Conquest provoked the native peoples in Mexico.
“Forgiveness magnifies governments and people, it is not humiliating. On the contrary, recognizing history, recognizing grievances, asking for forgiveness or regret and recovering it as part of history magnifies governments and people. So congratulations for this first step by the Chancellor of the Spanish Government in the recognition, particularly in this year, of indigenous women,” said the president.
Manuel Álbares mentioned the grievances of the Spanish crown during the inauguration of an art exhibition in Spain, in which artists from indigenous peoples participated. “Like all human history, it has chiaroscuro. There has been pain and injustice towards the native peoples. There was injustice, it is fair to recognize it and regret it. That is part of our shared history, we cannot deny it or forget it,” said the representative of the European country.
Sheinbaum assured that relations with Spain are not broken, but that the Chancellor’s words are a first step towards recognition and forgiveness. “There does not have to be reconciliation. We request it. It seems to me that bringing this exhibition and this first declaration from the Spanish Chancellor is a first step and it has to continue. Now, relations with Spain have never been, are not broken; there is a commercial relationship, there is a cultural relationship, this tourism thing will be done next year in Spain where Mexico is a special guest, in short, that relationship exists,” he indicated.
When questioned about the request for forgiveness that the leader of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took up, Sheinbaum replied: “It is part of the narrative, that the decisions even from our Government come from somewhere else, from President López Obrador to be very clear and well it is obvious that they do not. In fact, when I told him that I had made the decision not to invite the king, he told me that ‘you do not need to incorporate them into the Government, you are just starting. I am not doing it because you tell me or you don’t. say, I do it out of conviction’ and in fact it had to do with this grievance that I think is beginning to be settled today with this beginning of this speech when talking about regretting this violence of the past,” he explained.
“It is a living history today, if the Fourth Transformation has brought anything, it is the recognition of the dignity of the people of Mexico, which comes from our history and our part history, recognized by Mexican humanism, with one force from the native peoples and the other from the history of Mexico from Independence to the present day, the fight for independence, sovereignty, freedoms, democracy and justice. It is alive today, it is not a rhetorical matter. The native peoples, the indigenous peoples of today, have to be recognized as the cultural greatness of Mexico,” Sheinbaum insisted.
“The moment that is recognized, the people of Mexico are empowered, that is why it is not history, it is not something from the past. It represents the present, the dignity of the people and their strength, and we are going to continue to claim it,” he concluded.
