The Spanish police say they have deactivated “the first ‘accelerationist’ terrorist cell detected in Spain”, in the province of Castellón (region of the Valencian Community, in the east of the country), according to a statement released this Monday.
‘Accelerationism’ is a current associated with the extreme right and movements that defend white supremacy that calls for an “acceleration” of chaos to overthrow the existing order, through attacks.
In the police operation in Spain released this Monday, three people were arrested who were part of the “supremacist organization The Base”, created in the United States in 2018, “considered terrorist in the European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom and New Zealand”, says the same statement. The three detainees are accused of “belonging to a terrorist organization and capture, indoctrination and training for terrorist purposes”, as well as “illegal possession of weapons”.
In addition to the arrests, the police seized nine weapons, ammunition, “more than two dozen bladed weapons”, “complete military tactical equipment used in training activities”, “material and documentation of an ‘accelerationist’ and supremacist nature”, propaganda from the organization The Base, “neo-Nazi material” and “documentation glorifying other terrorist organizations”.
The leader of the Spanish cell was in direct contact with the founder of the group, who may be in Russia and who, the Spanish police highlighted, has already made a call for “consolidation of cells spread across several countries and the carrying out of selective attacks with the aim of collapsing Western democratic institutions”.
According to the police, the three detained in Spain were “highly radicalized, they based their lifestyle on the postulates of the terrorist organization and the willingness to carry out attacks”, having already undergone “several tactical training using paramilitary techniques and material”.
The Spanish police recalled that The Base organization wants to “achieve the objective of white supremacy through terrorism” and “operates as a decentralized network” of “small operational cells”.
According to the US police and Europol, the leader and founder of The Base is the American Rinaldo Nazzaro and the first references to the organization were known in 2018.
Members of the organization were responsible, according to US authorities, for acts of vandalism against synagogues in the country in 2019 and other activities with terrorist purposes in the following years, also in the United States.
In Europe, Europol and Eurojust have also coordinated international operations that targeted cells of this group, with suspects being detained in several countries (Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Lithuania, Romania and Italy).
