Mexico City.- Six years after the letter sent by Andrés Manuel López Obrador requesting an apology for the abuses committed during the Conquestthe Spanish government publicly recognized the “pain and injustice” towards the indigenous peoples. The statement was issued by Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares during the inauguration of the exhibition Women of Corn and the Cosmos: Indigenous Art Then and Now, in Madrid.

During his speech, Sheinbaum He read the prologue of the exhibition, in which he emphasizes that “the Conquest was not a meeting between equals, but a brutal process of violence, imposition and dispossession.” In her text, the president highlights the role of indigenous women as guardians of memory and resistance: “They were silenced, displaced, violated. However, they resisted in silence and in action, in the loom and in the word, in the ritual and in the community.”

Sheinbaum He recalled that this is the first time that a Spanish authority publicly regrets the injustice committed during the Conquest and assured that “recognizing grievances and asking for forgiveness magnifies people and governments.”

The exhibition, organized within the framework of the Year of Indigenous Women, seeks to make visible the art and worldview of indigenous peoples. “These women have woven their vision of the world for millennia; in their art there is the balance between the human and the divine, life and death, earth and water,” said the president.

For his part, Foreign Minister Albares recalled the solidarity of Mexico during the Spanish exile: “Spain “He will never forget the welcome of the Mexican people and the government of Lázaro Cárdenas to the exiles who found on that shore of the ocean the freedom that the dictatorship denied them here.”
