In late August, Spirit Airlines announced it was filing for bankruptcy for the second time in a year, citing financial trouble. The company previously reported plans to scale back operations, and it has just begun. Spirit Airlines will cut service to 11 cities starting in October.
A spokesperson for the Florida-based airline will end services to these cities starting October 2, 2025. Check out what airports will be affected below:
- Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) in New Mexico
- Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) in Alabama
- Boise Airport (BOI)
- Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) in Tennessee
- Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) in South Carolina
- Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport (OAK)
- Portland International Airport (PDX) in Oregon
- Sacramento International Airport (SMF)
- Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)
- San Diego International Airport (SAN)
- San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) in California
Part of their overhaul also includes axing plans to add Middle Georgia Regional Airport (MCN) in Macon, Georgia as part of its flight plans on October 16.
“We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund,” said the airline in a statement reported by CNBC.
Amid its bankruptcy and trying to compete with its competitors, Spirit Airlines plans to get rid of plans, focus on profitable networks, and cut costs where possible.
“Spirit is redesigning its network to focus its flying on key markets to provide more destinations, frequencies, and enhanced connectivity in certain of its focus cities, while simultaneously reducing its presence in certain other cities,” said Fred Cromer, chief financial officer of Spirit, in a court statement.
United Airlines is keeping ahead of the competition, having already given special offers on multiple new flights where Spirit Airlines operates. Its plans include adding 15 new flights to its roster to give customers better options.
