There are currently countless rumours swirling about an American version of Squid Game, and while nothing is confirmed as of yet, director Hwang Dong-hyuk pegged one Hollywood legend as the obvious choice for the lead.
Now that the third and final season of Squid Game has been released on Netflix, literally millions of us are wondering about possible continuations of the iconic story.
Fake posters and AI clips are becoming prevalent on TikTok, but admittedly, Cate Blanchett’s random cameo at the end of season three didn’t help things. Though director Hwang Dong-hyuk rejected speculation on Cate’s appearance leading directly on to an American version of Squid Game, there is simply no way Netflix is going to let another shameless cash grab slip through its fingers.
While Netflix gets their ducks in a row, here’s the legendary Hollywood star Dong-hyuk pegged as the Gi-Hun of American Squid Game.
An American Squid Game would need a powerful lead, and this guy might have the acting chops
In an interview with Vanity Fair at the start of the month, director Hwang Dong-hyuk noted how he would “seriously consider” an American spin-off of Squid Game if Netflix asked. Sitting alongside cast members, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Kang Ae-sim, Yim Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon and Jo Yu-ri, he revealed how Lee Jung-jae’s American counterpart could be played by noneother than Leonardo DiCaprio.
“We had a lot of rumours about him — will he be a cameo and such?” he said, referencing the rumour before season three that suggested Leonardo was set to make a cameo.
Those rumours heated up back in January when a report wrongly claimed that “‘Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio will be appearing in the Netflix mega-hit Squid Game Three.”
However, Netflix quickly shot down the speculation, issuing the following statement: “The rumours are completely false. Reports of Leonardo DiCaprio’s involvement in Squid Game Season three are entirely unfounded.”

Though the rumours were obviously fabricated, those stories must have sparked some inspiration in the mind of the Squid Game director. In his interview with Vanity Fair, he said Leonardo DiCaprio would be an obvious choice for a Gi-hun-like role in the American Squid Game.
“If he were to do it, I think he would do well as a player. Lately, he’s gotten good at loser roles like Gi-hun’s,” he added.
Kind of have to see it, just remember that his love interest needs to be no older than 25.
