Sri Lanka rupee weakens to 304.40/55 to US dollar, bond yields down

ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka has all offered Treasury bills at Wednesday’s auction with the 12-month yield marginally rising by 02 basis points, data from the state debt office show.

2.84 billion rupees of 3-month bills were sold at 7.52 percent, flat after offering 12 billion rupees.

37.22 billion rupees of 6-month bills were sold at 7.90 percent, up 01 basis point after offering 30 billion rupees.

15.0 billion rupees of 12-month bills were sold at 8.04 percent, up 0.02 basis points after offering 15 billion rupees.

Sri Lanka tax revenues have gone up 32 percent and current spending is growing at a slower pace and capital spending is flat.

However private credit is expanding strongly, and with the central bank not defending excess liquidity against private transactions or mopping up liquidity to build reserves, the rupee has depreciated.

However, liquidity has tightened from dollar sales to the state and banks are borrowing from the 8.25 percent window to mostly clear transactions, though some persistent borrowings has been seen in recent days. (Colombo/Oct29/2025)
