Baker Mayfield has made shrugging off adversity part of his football ethos, and apparently the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback doesn’t let setbacks define him in his love life either.
In an interview that aired before Tampa Bay’s Monday Night Football matchup with the Detroit Lions last night, Mayfield and his wife Emily sat down and discussed their relationship history. During the conversation, Mayfield revealed that his wife actually turned down his advances, which started with an overture sent through a mutual friend.
“Patrick [Hayes], of course, being a good friend, asked her if I could have her number, and she said no,” Mayfield said, via the New York Post. “So, I went to Instagram, hit the follow button, no follow back. Hit the unfollow button, hit the follow again, no follow back. Tried to slide into the DMs, no response. At this point, feeling pretty rejected, and finally, you gave Patrick the OK I can get your number.”
Well worth the wait
While Emily may have been hesitant to give Mayfield the time of day at first, she quickly realized on their first date that she had made a mistake.
“After, I went home and texted my mom and sister and said, ‘I think I might marry this guy.’ I just had this weird gut feeling,” Emily said.
Sure enough, the pair did tie the knot in July 2019, a little more than a year after getting engaged. They now have one child, a 1-year-old daughter Kova.
“My most prized role in the universe- ‘Mom,'” Emily Mayfield wrote in an Instagram post for Mother’s Day this year. “Thank you Jesus for trusting me to raise this baby girl. Thank you Fergus for being my most perfect first baby & allowing me to dip my toes into motherhood. Thank you Koko for making me a mama & taking it so easy on me. And thank you, Baker, for being my partner in this wild ride. There’s no one better. I’m the luckiest girl alive & I am beyond thankful.”
