“He’s just an amazing guy. Everyone loved him.” It was Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of the United States of America (USA) to the Middle East, that Donald Trump was referring to. When speaking in the Israeli Parliament, a few days ago, regarding the ceasefire agreement sealed between the Islamist group Hamas and Israel, the President of the USA praised the negotiator, allegedly full of qualities, whom he met decades ago.
Witkoff was Trump’s choice to deal with the war in the Middle East, having also met with Russia’s diplomatic team, namely Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, replacing the official special envoy for the region, Keith Kellogg. Without him, the President assured, that conflict would have turned into “World War III”.
The ties that unite the two men date back to four decades agowhen they met in a delicatessen in New York. Witkoff, now 68 years old, went there early in the morning to get food for his team. Trump was there too, but without a wallet in his pocket. “I ordered a Swiss cheese and ham sandwich for him,” recalled the real estate developer, years later, in 2023, when he testified in court in favor of Trump, who was then on trial for fraud. They didn’t meet for the next eight years, but Trump didn’t forget the night Witkoff bought him lunch.
