Street closure in protest against deficiencies in a primary school in the center of Mérida

MÉRIDA, Yucatán.— Tutors of students of the “Melchor Ocampo” primary schoollocated in the downtown Meridaexpressed their disagreement with the deficiencies suffered by students of this educational establishment for several weeks.

No light, no water

The women explained that they have not had classes for 15 days due to the lack of water and electricity, classes only started today.

They also pointed out that, in just 15 days, due to the lack of surveillance in the area on the part of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP), if registered three robberies on the educational campus which is located on 91st Street between 60 and 62 of the second square of Mérida; The thieves have taken the wiring and for this reason the facilities do not have electricity, which has caused harm to the students who have had to take classes in the school’s civic plaza.

There is a lack of teachers

Furthermore, since the course began, two teachers have been needed, one in first grade and one in fifth grade, but these places have not been filled and, therefore, the groups that do not have teachers have integrated them into other groups so that they do not run out of classes.

Given this situation of lack of teachers, the groups take turns going to school. One day one group attends and the next day the other group so that the teacher can attend to all the children.

Therefore, the students do not go to school every day, the groups are interspersed to attend class, a situation that represents a detriment to the right to education of the boys and girls of this “Melchor Ocampo” primary school.

No response from Segey

The women commented that they have gone to the Secretary of Education of the State Government (Segey) to ask for help to provide a solution to these situations, but they simply have not paid attention to them. They say that the director has also filed complaints and the SSP has already gone to the school to take data since the first robbery, but, despite this, surveillance by the state police continues to be null, which is why two other robberies occurred again.

Faced with this situation, the women decided to block 60th Street at 91st Street and assured that they will not move until an authority arrives at the scene to give them a solution.
