Student who was banned from every pub in England and Wales for biting bouncers avoids jail

A university student who was banned from every pub in England and Wales, after biting security staff, has avoided jail.

Jack Higgins-Burnett, who studies finance at Bournemouth University, bit multiple bouncers before his conviction.

Due to the biting incidents, the second year student had been banned from entering any pubs in England and Wales for six months.

However, shortly after the ban was lifted, Higgins-Burnett bit another bouncer on the cheek and thumb. According to Metro, he assaulted his victim whilst serving a suspended sentence for biting a different bouncer on the hand and breast.

He was also said to have bit a police officer in Guernsey after being removed from a bar.

Higgins-Burnett’s latest incident was in October 2024 when bit a member of door staff on the cheek, drawing blood. He said he doesn’t remember the incident but pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm.

Prosecuting, Robert Salame told Poole Magistrates Court: “Police were called as a male had assaulted a member of door staff at Cameo in Bournemouth.

“When they arrived, some door staff and security were restraining the defendant. There was a fight involving two males. A member of the door staff had been bitten by the defendant on the cheek and on his right thumb. Both bites drew blood.

“With the thumb, he refused to let go until he was restrained by other members of staff.”

In mitigation, Higgins-Burnett’s lawyer said his client accepts that he has “impulsive behaviour” when drunk, and said he has significantly reduced his alcohol consumption since the latest incident.

“He is exceedingly anxious about this. He’s about to go into his third year at university and is doing much better. I urge you to see if this is someone who can be turned around and realise the potential his father speaks of,” his lawyer added.

The magistrates gave Higgins-Burnett a nine month jail term suspended for 18 months.

He has also been ordered to carry out 120 days of an alcohol abstinence monitoring service, 30 rehabilitation days and must pay his victim £500 in compensation.
