A recent study published in the journal JAMA Oncology found a significant association between the use of hormonal contraceptives and an increased risk of breast cancer. The study included over two million women and showed that taking mini-pills containing the hormone desogestrel in particular increased the risk by 21%. In comparison, the risk for women taking combination pills was 12%.
The mini-pill, which contains only the hormone desogestrel, works by thickening cervical mucus, preventing ovulation and thinning the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. Combination pills also contain estrogen, which the researchers suspect may counteract the harmful effects of progestin.
However, the study authors emphasize that despite the identified risks, the benefits of hormonal contraceptives should not be ignored. These include not only the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, which are associated with increased risks to the mother’s health, but also protection against ovarian and uterine cancer.
Given these results, the importance of personalized advice when choosing a contraceptive method is highlighted. Women should discuss their individual risk profiles and preferences with their doctor to make an informed decision. Further research is needed to better understand the long-term effects of different hormonal contraceptive methods.
