Sudanese Sovereignty Council: No negotiations with Rapid Support in Washington news

The Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan denied – on Thursday evening – the existence of any direct or indirect negotiations with the Rapid Support Forces in Washington, as reported by some media outlets.

The statement added that the state’s position is firm and clear towards any dialogue or settlement, which is a commitment to the national solution that preserves the country’s sovereignty, unity, stability, and the rights of the Sudanese people.

The head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, had expressed a few days ago his readiness to negotiate in a way that would benefit Sudan and end the war in a way that would restore the country’s unity and dignity.

He explained – while offering his condolences to the family of an officer in the city of Atbara – that “whoever seeks peace and keeps the interest of the Sudanese people in mind, we welcome him. As for imposing peace or government on the people who reject it, we will not accept it.”

He added that there is no negotiation with any party, whether the Quartet or any other party, stressing that they are ready to negotiate in what is best for Sudan and ends the war in a way that “restores Sudan’s dignity and unity and eliminates the possibility of any rebellion.”

Regional media had previously reported from sources that Washington witnessed indirect negotiations on Thursday between representatives of the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, sponsored by the US State Department.

It reported that “the US State Department and regional mediators will conduct several separate meetings with the two parties to the conflict in Sudan, in preparation for an expected meeting of the international quartet in Washington at the end of this month.”

The international quartet was formed, led by the United States, last September, with the aim of reaching a political settlement in Sudan, and includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.

On September 12, the International Quartet called for an initial three-month humanitarian truce in Sudan, to enable urgent humanitarian aid to enter all regions, in preparation for a permanent ceasefire.

This will be followed by the launch of a comprehensive and transparent transitional process that will be completed within 9 months, in a way that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards establishing an independent civilian government, with a broad basis of legitimacy and accountability.

Since April 15, 2023, the army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that many regional and international mediations have not succeeded in ending. The war left about 20,000 people dead and more than 15 million displaced and refugees displaced, according to international and local reports, while a study prepared by American universities estimated the death toll at about 130,000 people.
