The nights are growing longer and the air’s getting colder, so you know what that means?
Yes, the spooky season, that wonderful time of year when people embrace things that go bump in the night, will soon be upon us.
So with that in mind, you’ll likely be looking for TV shows to send a chill down your spine.
Well, if that’s the case, Amazon Prime has the perfect show for you.
On September 20, the streaming service added the first two seasons of The Originals, a fantastic supernatural TV show beloved by critics and fans alike.
If you’ve never heard of it, The Originals is a spin-off from the wildly popular Vampire Diaries and follows the three siblings: Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah.
These siblings are part of the Mikaelson family, the first vampires ever to exist (hence the title); however, Klaus is special.
He’s a vampire-werewolf hybrid and has returned to his family home in New Orleans to help raise his soon-to-be-born child.
Things are complicated, however, when the Mikaelsons find themselves embroiled in local supernatural politics as they attempt to take down the self-proclaimed vampire king of New Orleans, Marcel.
It’s basically one big bloody soap opera with plenty of supernatural shenanigans.

The Originals ran for 92 episodes and five seasons and boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of 84%.
While critics clearly enjoyed the series, though, it’s the fans who have the highest praise for the series.
Lilly Yates wrote in her Google review: ‘The show is full of action and I never get bored of watching it. There are loads of supernatural creatures who come in adventures to try and save one another… If you are thinking of watching a show, I’ll 100% recommend this.’

The best vampire TV shows according to Rotten Tomatoes
If The Originals doesn’t sound like your cup of tea (or glass of blood), then don’t worry, we have other recommendations.
- Being Human (100%) – A hilarious and moving show about a vampire, a ghost, and a werewolf sharing a house.
- Interview With the Vampire (98%) – The ancient vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac tells his long, long, long life story to journalist Daniel Molloy.
- What We Do In The Shadows (96%) – Three vampires and their human familiar get into all sorts of trouble on Staten Island.
- Supernatural (93%) – Okay there might not be vampires in every episode, but the Winchester brothers battle bloodsuckers quite a lot as they try to avert the apocalypse.
- Midnight Mass (83%) – When a strange priest arrives in a dying town on an isolated island, strange things start happening, and old tensions bubble over.
She’s not alone in that enthusiastic praise. ‘Best American TV show ever,’ wrote Christine Dior. ‘Usually American shows failed to portray the emotion with required amount of intensity…BUT this is a masterpiece.’
Oh, and if you’re worried about it not living up to The Vampire Diaries, don’t worry, Vandana Nath says it does.
‘The Originals is the spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, one of the best television shows I’ve ever watched,’ they added. ‘So it had a lot to live up to. And did it? Well, it did, and more.’
The Originals is now streaming on Prime Video.
