This bread unites two very characteristic elements of Mexican culture: bread of the dead and talavera, and it is also decorated in an artisanal way, so all the pieces are unique.

Mexico City, October 25 (However).- In this autumn season, especially for the Day of the Dead, there is an essential element that is the favorite of many people: the bread of the dead, and in Mexico City there is a wide variety of proposals that provide a delicious moment, whether filled breads or those with special coverage such as the talavera bread of the dead.

A moment to enjoy

On Hidalgo Avenue in the south of the Mexican capital, specifically in Coyoacán, is Croque Voyage, a space that has been attracting for 3 years with croissants, pear baguette, pepper ciabatta, tiramisu, lemon tart and horchata tres leches cake.

“We can find artisanal bread, we have pancakes or specialty laminated doughs – which is our forte – pastries, cakes, pastries, good drinks to accompany our pancito, sandwiches and right now the novelty of pan de muerte is,” chef Daniel López of Croque Voyage revealed in an interview with However.

Talavera dead bread and other delicacies

If what you are looking for is a place with several options for bread of the dead, Croque Voyage has five:

  • Traditional bread of the dead: recipe with butter, orange blossom and orange.
  • Bread of the dead with chocolate coating: This bread of the dead delights the palates of those who like chocolate, since half of it is dipped in this ingredient.
  • Bread of the dead stuffed with horchata pastry cream: “We make a horchata pastry cream from scratch, we make our horchata concentrate, the rice, everything and we turn it into a pastry cream. That one is very delicious and the topping is pinole with sugar,” said the chef.
  • Bread of the dead stuffed with vanilla cream: “We also have one with vanilla cream along with red fruit compote, fresher.”
  • Talavera dead bread: “Regarding the bread of the dead, we have the Talavera bread, what it has is a vanilla glaze and the traditional bread of the dead that has butter, orange blossom and also orange,” said chef López.

Chef Daniel shared that Talavera is very beautiful to him. “I visit Puebla a lot, so there I often come across Talavera, obviously in Losa and it seemed quite beautiful and it can be replicated, […] I said ‘Why not replicate it here, in the business, the Talavera thing?’” said the chef.

The Talavera bread of the dead is, so far, the favorite of Croque Voyage diners. This bread enchants with its handmade decoration that is made in cobalt color – the characteristic tone of the Talavera with Designation of Origin – on the vanilla glaze provided by that white canvas, so each bread is different and unique.

Croque Voyage is located at Av. Miguel Hidalgo 76A, San Lucas, Coyoacán, Mexico City. The hours are: Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
