French actor Tchéky Karyo, known for his portrayals in films The Bearby Jean-Jacques Annaud, and Nikita – Die Hardby Luc Besson, died this Friday, October 31, aged 72, a victim of cancer.
The news was announced in a statement by the family published by AFP: “Valérie Keruzoré, his wife, and his children announce with regret the death of Tchéky Karyo, who succumbed to cancer this Friday, October 31.”
Born on October 4, 1953 in Istanbul, Turkey, the actor was the son of a Turkish truck driver (descended from a Jewish family of Spanish descent) and a Greek woman.
In 1982, Karyo made his film debut in All nightby Chantal Akerman, having been nominated for best new actor at the César awards that same year for his portrayal in Libra.
He later specialized in playing violent characters, and in 1988 he starred as a hunter in the film The Bear and two years later in Nikita – Die Hard.
During the 1990s he gained fame in France and this allowed him to pursue an international career. He acted opposite Gérard Depardieu in 1492: The Conquest of Paradise (1992), com Will Smith e Martin Lawrence em Bad Boys (1995), and played the role of Russian Defense Minister in GoldenEye (1995).
Recently, Tchéky Karyo acted in the films Of war wearyby Olivier Panchot, and Air Resistance by Fred Grivois.
