The anticipation for the return of the hit series Ted Lasso is on the horizon, and while there are plenty of unknowns ahead of Season 4, one of the biggest topics is casting. While we already know a short list of returning cast members that’ll join Jason Sudeikis, several noteworthy names remain up in the air. Among them is friend-turned-foe, who ultimately made a final return to AFC Richmond, Nathan Shelley, played by Nick Mohammed.
Shelley’s character was left with more unknowns than maybe anyone when Season 3 wrapped up, as he returned to the team while taking back his original job as a kit man.
Nick Mohammed Addresses Nathan Shelley’s Outlook in ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4

While fans can expect to see Sudeikis back as Lasso, Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent, Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, and Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins, Mohammed joins the group that fans can only list as TBD.
Although filming is reportedly still rolling along, and there’s no official release date set for the new season of Ted Lasso, you’d expect that most actors know if they’ll be making an appearance. However, when asked about the topic by Collider, Mohammed kept his lips sealed and mostly did his best to avoid giving naything away.
“I think sworn to secrecy is about right,” Mohammed said. “Look, I know that it’s about a whole different set of characters. I can’t even talk about it without giving anything away! We’ll have to see. We’ll have to see who pops up where and when. But I know that they’re filming it now, and I’ve been socializing with them all. They’re all very well, so we’ll see what happens.”
There are about five different ways to take those comments, including the part where Mohammed says he’s “been socializing with them all.” While this doesn’t necessarily mean Shelley will return, he’s a character that would make plenty of sense returning for Season 4.
How Nathan Shelley Could Fit in ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4
The big debate regarding former cast members and fan-favorites from the first three seasons of Ted Lasso, is how they’d fit in a series with Sudeikis coaching a women’s team. While Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt) and Cristo Fernandez (Dani Rojas) seem poised for at least a guest appearance in some fashion, it’s obviously not a simple fit into the storyline.
However, for Shelley, the fit comes with much more ease. Whether as the kit man or an assistant coach, Shelley’s role could easily be carved out. This is why there’s been some fan speculation that Mohammed will likely be back in the mix, although it was interesting that he wasn’t listed among the initial core group of names returning.
Regardless, one thing we do know is that Ted Lasso Season 4 is poised to take things forward with an entirely new core group of players. While the men’s AFC Richmond team quickly became a beloved team of underdogs managing to rise through the ranks, we’ll have to wait and see if the women’s team begins with the same outlook.
