A search operation is underway at Wedge Beach in Durban after a 16-year-old male teenager was reported missing in the surf zone on Friday evening, 8 August.
According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the teenager was believed to be part of a local school outing when he went missing around 18:08.
Emergency Response Mobilised
The NSRI Durban duty crew, KZN Surf Rescue Network, Police Search and Rescue, Metro Police Search and Rescue, and the SA Police Services responded swiftly to the scene.
The NSRI rescue craft Spirit of Surfski 6 was launched, and an extensive sea and shoreline search was conducted throughout the night.
Despite their efforts, no sign of the missing teen has been found.
The search resumed on Saturday morning and remains ongoing.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and the SAPS have launched an investigation.
“Thoughts, care and compassion are with the family and friends of the missing teenager during this incredibly difficult time,” the NSRI said in a statement.
Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to contact local authorities.
