Unforeseen turbulence is every passenger’s worst nightmare, with a recent Ryanair flight across Spain leading cabin crew to sustain injuries when getting flung acorss the cabin.
During their route between Vitoria on the Spanish mainland and Palma in Mallorca, the on-flight crew were on their feet when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence during their descent. The bumps were caused by a storm front moving through the area while they were performing safety checks, according to The Sun.
One of the crew was flung into the ceiling of the aircraft, while another was struck by a service trolley that was being pushed down the aisle during the incident. The crew and the flight’s 180 passengers were met with emergency services when they arrived at Son Sant Joan airport.
Details on the extent of the airline crew’s injuries are unknown and have not been made public yet. Reports also do not detail that any of the passengers were injured during the chaotic turbulence.
Ryanair has made no official comments on the incident.
Injuries due to turbulence haven’t been uncommon lately, with an American Airlines flight having also experienced unsuspected turbulence in late June that led five people to be rushed to the hospital. A flight from Ecuador to Atlanta in September also led to a few minor injuries.
The following month, a Europe-bound Delta Airlines flight also encountered a bumpy ride over Wymoning, which led multiple passengers to be thrown into the aircraft’s ceiling and back down.
Experts warn that in-flight turbulence may become more common due to global warming and weather changes.
