Tesla increases salaries in German Gigafactory by 4 percent

GRÜNHEIDE / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Tesla has increased the salaries of its 11,000 employees at the Gigafactory in Brandenburg by four percent. This measure is retroactive to December 1st and is seen as part of a promise to regularly review wages. While Tesla celebrates the increase as a positive step, IG Metall remains critical and continues to demand a collective agreement.

The recent salary increase at Tesla in the German Gigafactory in Grünheide is causing different reactions. While the company presents the four percent increase as a sign of its commitment to regularly reviewing wages, the IG Metall union remains skeptical. According to Tesla human resources manager Erik Demmler, this adjustment was implemented independently and without union influence, which is considered remarkable in the current economic situation.

IG Metall, on the other hand, sees the salary increase as no reason to give the all-clear. Jan Otto, district manager of IG Metall for Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony, emphasizes that despite the increase, wages at Tesla continue to lag behind the usual level in the German auto industry. The union therefore continues to demand a collective agreement that could also regulate additional benefits such as Christmas bonuses.

Tesla advertises that the new starting salary for production employees is around 6,000 euros above the collectively agreed annual salary in the region, which corresponds to an increase of 14.5 percent. However, IG Metall criticizes this comparison as misleading because Tesla uses the lowest pay group in the collective agreement, which is often not even awarded in automobile factories. In addition, the longer working hours at Tesla would actually increase the gap to the collective agreement to 30 to 35 percent.

There is currently a lot of talk in the automotive industry about job cuts and zero pay, which makes the salary increase at Tesla appear in a positive light. Nevertheless, the question remains open as to whether a unilateral salary increase can replace a real collective agreement. The discussion about fair pay and working conditions will continue as Tesla tries to consolidate its position as an attractive employer in the region.
