Thanks to Donald Trump, ‘the world started to enjoy more peace’: Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi nominates US President Nobel Peace Prize

Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, made international headlines on October 28, by formally nominating US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. The announcement was made during a meeting in Tokyo between the two leaders, underscoring the strengthening ties between Washington and Tokyo under Takaichi’s leadership.

Takaichi, who is the first woman to lead Japan, lauded President Trump for his role in advancing global peace and stability within a remarkably short timeframe. Highlighting Trump’s contributions, she praised his facilitation of recent ceasefire agreements in the Middle East between Israel and Hamas, as well as peace efforts in Southeast Asia, particularly between Thailand and Cambodia.

She described these achievements as historic and unprecedented, stating through an interpreter, “in such a short period of time, the world started to enjoy more peace on the ground”.
The nomination adds Japan to a growing list of countries and leaders endorsing Trump’s candidacy for the prestigious prize.

Other notable endorsements include Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet for Trump’s mediation in border conflicts, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his role in de-escalating hostilities between Pakistan and India, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who credited Trump with helping end conflicts involving Iran. Additionally, Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders jointly plan to recognize Trump for his involvement in peace efforts between their countries.

During their Tokyo meeting, Takaichi also reinforced Japan’s commitment to deepening the US-Japan strategic alliance, reaffirming cooperative efforts on trade, defense, and critical minerals. She presented Trump with symbolic gifts, including a golf ball made using Japan’s gold leaf technique and golf equipment previously owned by the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who enjoyed a close personal and political relationship with Trump.President Trump reciprocated with high praise for Takaichi, recognizing her as a wise and strong leader and highlighting her historic role as Japan’s first female prime minister. Their discussions also encompassed economic and security cooperation, including a $550 billion package of American investments focused on sectors such as shipbuilding, soybean and natural gas purchases, and efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese rare earth minerals.

This nomination comes at a time when Trump has actively positioned himself as a global peacemaker, boasting resolution of multiple conflicts across diverse regions in 2025. He cited efforts to mediate tensions involving Pakistan and Taliban-led Afghanistan, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and facilitation of peace in countries including Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Middle East.

The Nobel Peace Prize, awarded annually by a Norwegian committee, recognizes outstanding contributions to peace efforts worldwide. The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, recognized for her tireless work promoting democratic rights and her struggle to achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.
