Another day, another TikTok trend taking over your FYP. This time, it’s the What’s going on (or Beez in the Trap) trend, a mashup that somehow fuses Nicki Minaj’s iconic 2012 banger with a 90s rock anthem. Even Malala Yousafzai has done it.

So, what actually is the “What’s Up” trend?
It’s all based on a remix of two totally different songs: Nicki Minaj’s Beez in the Trap (feat. 2 Chainz) and 4 Non Blondes’ 1993 hit What’s Up? The trend starts with one person lip-syncing dramatically to What’s Up? — you know, the “and I said, hey yeah yeah” bit — while standing back-to-back with someone else. Then, just as the camera pans around, the second person bursts in with Nicki’s Beez in the Trap verse.

Minaj said the phrase “I beez in the trap” means she’s always making money, as she explained on the Graham Norton Show when the song came out.
To join in, you just need a friend and a bit of camera coordination. Start by filming one of you singing the emotional What’s Up? intro while standing back-to-back, then spin the camera around right as the beat switches to Beez in the Trap, revealing the second person delivering Nicki’s verse.

Everyone from Kylie Jenner to Joe Jonas has jumped on the trend — but the one that truly broke the internet? Malala Yousafzai and Jimmy Fallon. Their video has racked up over 73 million views, with the top comment reading: “Oh my God, I don’t think people understand how revolutionary this is.”

Malala even posted a follow-up TikTok where she jokingly censored Nicki’s swear words, saying that TikTok rehearsals and UN speeches are “difficult for different reasons”.

Sabrina Carpenter and SNL cast member Marcello Hernandez filmed their own version in the studio before her Saturday Night Live hosting gig, and that clip’s been viewed more than 18 million times.
The Kardashians, Khalid, and even Sabrina Carpenter have all joined in — plus, Halloween-themed versions of the trend are taking over too.
