Cape Town is like one big urban playground. There are so many things to do and see, how do you pack it all in one trip?
While sometimes it’s easier to whizz through places, and some prefer that, it’s harder to completely savour them that way.
The Mother City and its surrounding areas are ideal slow travel destinations. If you like more of a slow burn, here are some ideas to keep in mind for your visit.
Slow travel in Cape Town
One of the best ways to take it slow is to find a place to stay and make your base for a few days or weeks. There are gorgeous suburbs in Cape Town suited to all tastes and preferences. Recommended areas include Seapoint, Gardens, and Kloof Street, if you want to be closer to the city.
From there, explore the Mother City as if you live there, as if you are a local. Instead of using a taxi or bus, take a slow walk to a nearby coffeeshop (there are tons!), explore one of the local markets, or do a slow cycle through the V&A Waterfront and along the Seapoint Promenade.
If you fancy exploring or staying outside the city, the options are nearly endless, and the setting is perfect for a slow drive. If you don’t have a car, you can hire one or organise a tour bus, but nothing beats being on your own time in your own vehicle.
The Cape Peninsula will offer the most beautiful views and stop-off points in coastal towns along the way. Soak in the culture and community vibes in places like Camps Bay, Hout Bay, the famous Chapman’s Peak drive, Noordhoek, and all the way to Cape Point and Boulder’s Beach, where you can see some penguins!
A Winelands tour is a perfect slow day! Take one of the tours available so you don’t have to worry about driving. You can visit places like Franschoek, Stellenbosch, Paarl, and more. There are fun tram and tractor tours available too.
Don’t forget a relaxing day on the beach. Keep an eye out; depending on the time of the year, you can find a few quiet beaches. Have a chilly dip in the ocean and a delicious lunch in a selection of restaurants available in places like Camps Bay, Llandudno Beach, or Clifton’s beaches.
