I remember him standing tall, erect, with bloodshot eyes. A Nicolás Maduro playing determination. Him against the world. And in that state of great excitement, haranguing his troops, he reminded President Donald Trump to go look for him, that he should not take long to arrive, that he was waiting for him at the Miraflores Palace. In essence, it was the classic bravado of a dictator who only knows how to harm his citizens: the Venezuelans.
But suddenly, the discourse changed. He no longer threatened him, nor snapped at him. Suddenly we saw a vulnerable, docile, labile, voluble Nicolás Maduro. And that happened at the moment when Trump ordered the destruction of the narcolanchas in the Caribbean, because they threatened the health of American citizens with fentanyl. It was there that he first realized that, perhaps, his tyrannical regime was near the end.
Today we find a Nicolás Maduro, at least calmer, waiting for events. Now he desperately seeks supranational organizations such as the UN or the Organization of American States, the OAS, which he despised so much. Maybe you’re worried about how it ends. There are recent examples, such as Saddam Hussein who ended up hanging. Or Muammar Gaddafi stoned by his people. We’ll see how this whole series ends.
