Since Donald Trump took office, the image of the USA in Germany has changed significantly. A representative survey by the opinion research institute Forsa, carried out on behalf of the magazine ‘Internationalepolitik’, shows that 65 percent of Germans report a deterioration in their opinion of the United States. This development is particularly pronounced among women, 74 percent of whom perceive a negative change.
Interestingly, the survey shows that the youngest and oldest population groups in Germany see the USA in a worse light. For those aged 18 to 29 and those over 60, the deterioration rate is 70 and 71 percent respectively. These numbers suggest that dissatisfaction with US policy under Trump runs across generations.
A notable difference can be seen among AfD supporters, of whom only 22 percent report a deterioration in their opinion of the USA. In contrast, supporters of the governing parties CDU/CSU and SPD are significantly more disappointed, with deterioration rates of 76 and 80 percent respectively. For the Greens and the Left Party, this figure is an impressive 91 percent.
The survey results highlight the complex relationships between Germany and the USA. While the transatlantic partnership has traditionally been strong, policy decisions and rhetoric under the Trump administration have led to noticeable alienation. This development could have long-term implications for diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries.
