MIAMI.-La Inter-American Press Society (IAPA) condemned the murder of pjournalist Fernando Álvarezwhich occurred in the province of Guayas, Ecuador, and requested the authorities to carry out a rapid, exhaustive and impartial investigation to identify and punish all those responsible.
Journalist died during a soccer match
According to local media, the crime occurred on the night of October 28, 2025, when Álvarez was playing a soccer game with friends. Armed subjects shot him at least 15 times, causing his death at the scene.
The journalist was founder and administrator of the digital media FernandoTVwhere he covered local news and citizen complaints, standing out for his informative work in the region.
The president of the IAPA, Pierre Manigault, requested that journalistic work not be ruled out as a possible motive for the crime.
They express solidarity with the family
Likewise, he expressed solidarity with Álvarez’s family and warned that impunity in crimes against communicators weakens citizens’ right to information and encourages new attacks against the press.

For her part, Martha Ramos, president of the IAPA Committee on Freedom of the Press and Information, pointed out that Ecuador faces serious violations to freedom of the press, reflected in aggressions, threats and other attacks against journalists and media.
Ramos asked that the authorities publicly report on the progress of the investigation into this murder.
Attacks on journalists in Ecuador
This year, in addition to Álvarez, Patricio Aguilar was murdered, director of the community newspaper El Libertador, on March 4, 2025 in Quinindé, province of Esmeraldas, for apparent reasons related to his professional work.
These cases show the growing concern of organizations defending freedom of expression about the communicator safety in the country.
The Fundamedios organization also condemned the murder and urged the Ecuadorian State to guarantee the protection of journalists.
