Israeli Channel 12 reported that the Knesset approved, on Wednesday, the preliminary discussion on the law imposing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank.
The channel explained that the proposed law was supported by 25 votes, compared to 24 opponents.
In his first comment on the decision, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said, “The time to impose sovereignty over the West Bank has now come.”
Many members of the Israeli government are pushing to impose sovereignty on the West Bank, which will ultimately result in the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Earlier, Israeli Radio said that the occupation government fears that passing the law strengthening the occupation of the West Bank will lead to igniting a crisis with US President Donald Trump.
On July 23, the Knesset supported a proposal to annex the West Bank, with a majority of 71 deputies out of a total of 120.
This step was met with condemnation from the Palestinian presidency. The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) described it as invalid, illegal, and undermining the chances of peace and a two-state solution.
At the end of last September, the Times of Israel newspaper quoted an Israeli official, “The Trump administration secretly warned Tel Aviv against annexing the occupied West Bank in response to the decision of many Western countries to recognize the State of Palestine.”
The Israeli official, whom the newspaper described as senior, indicated that Tel Aviv does not see this warning as “the end of the discussion,” and that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – who is wanted by the International Criminal Court – intends to discuss the matter with Trump.
