The Next James Bond is Reviving One Classic Casting Tradition

For decades, the producers behind the James Bond movies selected scenes from previous 007 moments to find the new version of the secret agent. And now, according to the rumors about Scott Rose-Marsh having auditioned for the role of the next onscreen James Bond, within that process, the new 007 regime at Amazon MGM is retaining one casting tradition from the old days.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, when Scott Rose-Marsh auditioned to play James Bond back in June, he read lines from the Pierce Brosnan debut GoldenEye. This was likely the casino scene between Bond and Xenia Onatopp, played by the legendary Famke Janssen. Back in the early 2000s, when EON was auditioning new James Bond hopefuls to replace Brosnan, both Henry Cavill and Rupert Friend read the same scene from GoldenEye during their auditions. So, if new Bond director Denis Villeneuve was part of this process, he and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are retaining a process that used to work for the old guard.

Prior to the release of GoldenEye, Bond producers Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, and later, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, employed a different James Bond moment to audition new 007 hopefuls. The moment was drawn from Sean Connery’s second Bond film, 1963’s From Russia With Love

In 2023, according to the Radio Times, former Bond producer Michael G. Wilson reiterated what fans have known for years: “We always use the same scene and that’s the one in From Russia With Love where Bond comes back to his room after the assassination, and he starts taking off his shirt…Then he hears something, takes his gun, goes in, and the girl’s in the bed…Anyone who can bring that scene off is right for Bond. It’s tough to do.”

Daniel Craig also had to perform this scene, despite the GoldenEye scene also being used during screen tests at that time. It’s not confirmed that Scott Rose-Marsh did the GoldenEye scene for an audition at all, but if he did, there’s good money he also had to do the famous From Russia With Love scene, too.

Will Scott Rose-Marsh really play James Bond?

Scott Rose-Marsh, the star of Wolves of War, is 37 years old and certainly has a distinctive look that could make him the next Bond. His resume isn’t massive, but then again, neither was Daniel Craig’s before Casino Royale

At a glance, Rose-Marsh also looks a bit like the way author Ian Fleming described Bond in the novels, a resemblance to musician Hoagy Carmichael with a dash of Fleming himself.

Could we be getting a very book-accurate Bond? If you put a scar that runs down one side of Rose-Marsh’s face, he might be the most literary 007 ever.

The next James Bond film is currently untitled and does not have a release date, though 2028 is expected.
